Category Analyst
Position Summary
The Category Analyst plays a critical role in supporting the Category Management team by analyzing performance data across multiple categories and translating insights into actionable strategies. This position is responsible for maintaining data accuracy, validating promotional and new item information, and delivering timely, insightful reports that drive business decisions and optimize category performance. This is a full-time, hourly position with the potential for overtime.
Key Responsibilities
Data Analysis & Reporting
Collect, organize, and analyze sales, margin, and inventory data across assigned categories.
Create recurring and ad-hoc reports that identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
Translate raw data into actionable insights that support Category Managers in pricing, promotions, and assortment decisions.
Develop dashboards and scorecards to track category performance at corporate, regional, and store levels.
Promotions & New Item Management
Assist Category Managers in validating promotional pricing, new item setups, and product discontinuations.
Support end-to-end data management for promotional events and seasonal resets.
Verify accuracy of promotional data within PDI, planogram, and POS systems prior to execution.
Partner with internal teams (Marketing, Supply Chain, Store Operations) to ensure timely execution of promotions and new item rollouts.
Business Intelligence & Data Governance
Maintain master data integrity across multiple platforms and databases.
Audit and troubleshoot data discrepancies to ensure accurate reporting and analysis.
Collaborate with IT and Finance to streamline data flows and enhance system capabilities.
Support development of automated reporting tools and standardized data templates.
Strategic Support
Partner with Category Managers to identify assortment gaps, pricing opportunities, and vendor performance insights.
Contribute to quarterly and annual business reviews with fact-based insights and visual storytelling.
Support competitive analysis and market benchmarking to inform the go-to-market strategy.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Data Analytics, Finance, or related field
Experience in category management, merchandising analysis, or business intelligence (convenience retail or CPG experience a plus).
Skills & Competencies
Strong analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to translate data into actionable insights.
Advanced proficiency in Excel, Power BI, and/or Tableau; working knowledge of SQL or PDI Enterprise is a plus.
High attention to detail with strong organizational and time management abilities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and thrive in a fast-paced retail environment.
